Kenyu Sumie, Chairman of the Japanese Medical And Dental Practitioners Association, said on May 19, 2021 that it is ‘almost impossible’ to send 200 doctors and 500 nurses to the Olympic Games as requested by the International Olympic Committee. Less than 30% of medical workers in Tokyo are fully vaccinated and only 1.85% of the population have taken the jab, according to reports. Sumie says he also fears that holding the Games poses the risk of introducing a new Covid-19 variant to Japan.
