Former NBA commissioner David Stern died on New Years Day, 2020, at the age of 77. On December 12, 2019, he suffered a hemorrhage in his brain, undergoing prompt emergency treatment. Today, after nearly three weeks, he finally passed away.
David Stern is best remembered by many as being the commissioner of the NBA for 30 years, from 1984 to 2014. He succeeded Larry O'Brien and preceded the current commissioner, Adam Silver. Stern was credited with increasing the league's popularity throughout the 1990s and 2000s. He developed a relationship between the NBA and China, expanded the league from 23 teams to 30 teams, and championed the birth of the WNBA. His efforts have forever changed the NBA, helping it to grow into its present state. He may not have worn a professional jersey or dunked a basketball, but he is definitely one of the league's greats.
