  • Gene Therapy: NBA - Is Philly Special?

    Philadelphia 76ers

    by Gene Clemons

Ben Simmons and James Harden finally got what they were looking for and in doing so they have possibly changed the entire landscape of the NBA's Eastern Conference. While New Jersey will definitely miss what Harden brings to the table as a scorer and a facilitator, removing him from the lineup and inserting players secure in their roles, and willing to do some of the dirty work offensively and defensively that Harden was not committed to, can actually improve the team. Adding to that intrigue is the opportunity for Kyrie Irving to return to the team full time with New York relaxing their restrictions. For Philadelphia it is simple. They will actually get a player willing to play. While getting rid of a player who has been a tremendous distraction to their team since the end of their 20-21 season.

If Simmons can return to the court and become the player he was with Philly, he is a plus defender and elite athlete who could be a slasher in an offense that would not require him to play the point or dominate the ball. He also provides them with another ball handler who can facilitate with a second unit. The Nets also received help in the form of sharpshooter Seth Curry, who can provide even more off-the-ball scoring power or to compliment the on-ball offensive prowess of the team.

    My problem with Philly

Although the "trust the process" days are over for the sixers, the stigma behind what they did still permeates the halls and affects everything. What they created was a culture of losing with zero accountability. The thought that you could purposely lose your way to a winning team is a flawed logic. While you may end up drafting valuable pieces, if you never teach them the value of winning, how do you expect them to build and sustain a winning culture? The process stunted Joel Embiid's progress as he spent too much time on the sideline and not enough on the court becoming the leader, and dominant force that we see today. Now he's spent the last few years figuring out the dedication necessary to be a champion. That's something Ben Simmons never learned (we'll put a pin in that).

In steps James Harden who, because of his immense skill, has been able to skate by without absorbing full responsibility for his postseason shortcomings. Harden has never been the model of health and fitness (similar to Embiid) and when the lights were brightest, he seemed to shrink. But more damming is when it was time to collect responsibility, he's looked for the out and now for the second time in his career he purposely sabotaged his current team to force a trade to what he believes is a better option. That type of behavior doesn't scream champion, but this is what we sew being sold as legitimate championship contenders. Two supremely talented stars who have never won anything with a history of fitness issues and a track record of unavailability or coming up small in big moments.

    My Problem With Brooklyn

This issue with Brooklyn is simple. They can't be relying on Ben Simmons, right? There's nothing about the Ben Simmons situation that would make me feel good about putting him on the court. I have long suspected Simmons was fool's gold. Choosing to go to LSU over all the major players who understand what the one and done life is all about, felt like he was afraid of the pressure that would come with attending one of those marquee universities where basketball is king.

The second red flag came with his disinterested game at LSU and inability to elevate that program to a tournament level. Then there was his rookie season. While most believe that Simmons misses his first season due to injury, the truth is that he was capable of coming back but he (armed with the blessing of an organization dedicated to losing on purpose) decided that making a couple million dollars by sitting out and waiting until next season to play and possibly win rookie of the year was worth more than playing the second half of the season and gaining valuable experience.

Finally, after last season, where he was upset over receiving deserved criticism, he wanted out. He refused to show up for work this NBA season and when the Sixers began to fine him, he announced that he was dealing with mental health issues. The issue was that with Philly, Simmons was not expected to play this season but magically when he's traded to Brooklyn now, he's preparing to return. Did a trade really solve his mental health issues or is it fair to wonder if he ever really had issues. That's the type of element that Brooklyn is welcoming in.

    Instant rivalry

At the very least, this immediately becomes the best current rivalry in the NBA. Not since the Pierce/Garnett Celtics were bumping up against the Heatles'' has the Eastern Conference been so spicy. KD and Kyrie will definitely be looking to cook Harden when they match up and of course Harden will look to show them what they are missing. Of course, Embiid will jump into whatever beef as he is the biggest troll in the NBA and maybe, just maybe Ben Simmons will stand up and show the type of fire that could make him a legit factor in a series.

As of now, the Sixers are the new Belle of the ball. Harden has come out doing all the things that make you fall in love with his talent and if you listen to Embiid, life has never been better, and the game has never been easier. We've seen this honeymoon phase before. The question is, will this marriage last or will the Wandering eye of Harden and his unwillingness to work on his flaws rear their head once again?

  • First Year Coaching Highschool in the Pandemic Era.

    by Andrew Williams

After accepting the position to coach Junior Varsity girls for Legacy Highschool in North Las Vegas I was unsure what to expect.  Sure, I had experience with the Freshman squad a few years before but that was a different climate. That was the good ole days. That was B.C. (Before Covid), things were different then. With only two games remaining in my season, I felt I can take some time to reflect on what made this year so different.

This year I was first chair, head coach, the big kahuna. All the good and bad fell on me and I was determined to turn all bad into good.  Normally the main issue would be just grades and disciplinary issues but not this year.  This year my roster suffered from continuity issues. At one point I had 8 players out due to Covid and this by the fifth game. The main hurdles were faced by my back court I watched possibly one of the more capable ball handlers in my freshman class miss game after game due to academics, and then watched our turnovers almost triple.

One of the things that stood out the most as far playing in a pandemic season was the development of basketball greatly fell off.  In this area (Las Vegas) we used to have a great pipeline for girls' basketball. In the before times, we had a league for young ladies from ages 4- 13 called GYBL. This league was focused on developing girls in every age group to be ready for school ball. The beauty of this league was it was never directly associated with any AAU program. This neutrality made a safe place for all teams. Rivals would welcome rivals; every week was the Game of the Year. Every challenge was intense, at any given time you can see an icon in Women’s basketball roaming a sideline or giving an amazing life changing speech. This was our Gauchos; this was our testing ground for all the new moves we learned. This competitive environment created a pool of excellent women basketball players that would go on to be competitive in Highschool and college basketball.  Once the Covid shutdown happened the pipeline dried up. Now I see across the Valley, multiple junior varsity teams with novice players.

As for my junior varsity team yes, we had some novice players and some covid absences but with all that we still are sitting 8-5 before our last two games are played. We played, we lost, we fought back, and we won, all in all we grew from this season as a team. I as a coach has grown from this season and as a person. I wish at some point these girls would have had a chance to experience the purity and innocence of the GYBL.

So here we are 3 years after the doors shut on the greatest basketball prep league in Las Vegas area, and we have a disconnect. As I sit at my desk prepping for my last 2 games of the season I sit and wish they could have played more. I wish they had the games they needed to be great at this point. Who knows what girls' basketball will look like in the future in Las Vegas, but one thing that is for sure it will never be what it was B.C (Before Covid)?

  • Gene Therapy: Jeff Garcia vs Mina Kimes | Put Away Your Capes!

    by Gene Clemons

In this country there are a lot of heroes. Some heroes are essential. Good police officers, firefighters, doctors, nurses, teachers, and many of the other nameless, faceless workers who go through life tirelessly working for the betterment and safety of others. Some heroes are unexpected. The person who rescues a kid who swam a little too far out and is not caught in the current with little to no energy left. The ones that pull you back before you walk into the street and get hit by a car because you were not paying attention. The person that opens the elevator so that you can make it on before it closes. People who stand up for those that are being oppressed, discriminated against, ridiculed for no reason and bullied. Then there are the heroes that nobody ever asked for. The one’s who pick every opportunity to come to the aid of someone who never asked for help or has even seemed as if they needed assistance. Where I am from, we call it “Caping.” You know a lot of heroes' wear capes and that is where the verb comes from.

Last week former NFL quarterback Jeff Garcia was recklessly critical of ESPN football analyst Mina Kimes for her negative opinion on Jimmy Garoppolo. He questioned her ability to do the job and wondered aloud why anyone would ever hire her as a football mind. To be honest, he was completely out of line. Instead of engaging in a dialogue that could have produced a better understanding of her position and thus moved the conversation forward. He could have criticized without demeaning or degrading Kimes but emotions (and whatever he was drinking) clearly got the best of him. Within minutes of seeing Garcia’s rant, there were people firing back at him. Someone could have started a #GrillGarcia thread, sit back, and watch the replies pour in. It is a popular thing to do and Kimes is a figure that attracts all of the rescuers, so it was not surprising to see so many come to her defense. My only question is, why? Why do so many feel the need to defend Kimes against those that would attack her verbally? Why are they so invested in her?

This is the part that we never seem to get to when it comes to equality. In all of the areas of sports that I exist in there is criticism. Some of it is constructive and definitely helps and some of it is just as ridiculous or worse than how Garcia attacked Kimes but here is the difference, nobody came to my rescue. Yes, I know I don’t work at ESPN or any other big-time network that is regularly consumed by millions but even in my little niche there were no heroes there for me. Why? Because this is a part of the gig. As an analyst when you give your opinion (regardless of whether it is based on facts or not) people will agree or disagree. The rational ones will disagree respectfully, but we live in an irrational society. So those responses come with the job. It is a job that Kimes and those like her are being paid handsomely to do. Does that mean you deserve to be ridiculed because you make a lot of money, no but it does mean you should understand.

In my mind this is the final frontier of equality for women in male sports. A female reporter should be admonished if she says something that is off base or inherently biased because that is what would happen to a male reporter. If a male reporter can be criticized because he never played the game, the same criticism should be expected for a woman who didn’t. As women move into decision-making positions in male sports, are we expecting them to not be criticized when they make a bad selection in the draft or obtain a free agent bust? If they are not allowed to be criticized, then are we really treating them as equals?

And what are you saying when you run to Kimes defense every single time someone has something negative to say about her? What you think you are saying is “I have your back.” What you are really saying is, “I don’t know if you can handle this yourself.” That is an even bigger slap in the face than the criticism or ridicule. Ladies and especially gentlemen, Mina Kimes does not need you to defend her. She is one of the most intelligent, quick-witted, and self-deprecating people in sports broadcasting. She can more than take care of herself. When she decides that she wants to dignify stupidity with a response, it is normally something that shuts a troll down or exposes the hypocrisy or ridiculousness of a statement. She’s a wordsmith so especially on social media she does not need any of us to defend her. She’s a warrior and the keyboard is her weapon. She has the right to defend herself as much as she has the right to be defended and I am sure in an honest moment she would probably want it that way. I wonder if all of the heroes would have just shut up for a second, if she would have even bothered responding to Garcia’s comments. I’d like to believe she would not because why would she bring relevance to someone who has not been relevant in a very long time?

It was an opportunity missed and that has been the case for many women in male dominated sports. Before they ever get the chance to prove that they are not fazed by the comments of the insignificant or the brain dead, here comes “Captain Save Her” swooping in to be her shield and knight in shining keyboard strokes. The hubris of men is amazing. To think that the only way a woman can feel protected and or comfortable is if a man is there is the type of archaic philosophies that led to the current inequalities in our world. In sports, the moment that we became ok with unathletic men giving us their sports takes, we should have been ok with unathletic women doing it as well. In the same breath if there’s a criticism of a male analyst that includes their lack of playing experience, then it is ok to lob that low hanging fruit at a woman. I would expect both people to handle it the same way. I don’t feel the need to save either one.

The question becomes, why do you?

  • Kaepernick

    Colin Kapernick

    Kaepernick

    by Diaz Mackie

11.13.2019  Kaepernick, the name itself, polarizing. Like Batman, a symbol of justice and for others, an unpatriotic rebel rouser. If for some reason you’re unfamiliar with Colin Kaepernick, he’s a former NFL Quarterback that has been “blackballed” by the NFL.

In 2016, the former QB decided that he wanted to use his platform to bring awareness to the amount of minorities, primarily Black that had been unjustly executed by police. He initially chose to make his stand against this social injustice by sitting during the national anthem. Many found this to be a sign of disrespect to the country & military. Former Army Green Beret & NFL player, Nate Boyer suggested that he take a knee as opposed to simply sitting. Kaepernick took heed to the advice & knelt instead of sitting during the 2016 season. Here’s where things get interesting. 2017 Kap decides to void out his contract with the San Francisco 49ers & try his luck with free agency. Reportedly the Denver Broncos led by President and former NFL QB for the same franchise offers Kap 7 million for one year. Kap declines, thinking he could get more and a chance to start. Coming off of a few declining years in play, some teams didn’t see him as a starter and not worth the attention, or distraction to their organizations.

Fast forward three years, Kaepernick has since sued the NFL for colluding to keep him out. He received a settlement to the amount of 60 - 80 million dollars. However, Saturday November 16th of 2019, Kaepernick will workout for all 32 NFL teams for the first time in the last three years in Atlanta. An actual workout and interviews are to be held. Representatives from Dallas and few other teams are reported to show high interest in signing Kaepernick.

Now the question to be asked is, why now? What has changed? Usually, an employee who uses the employer and wins, or settles, seldom returns to work for a sed employer. Some believe it’s due to the recent amount of starting QB’s that have been injured this season. Some believe it’s due to the emergence of Lamar Jackson, the walking highlight QB for the Baltimore Ravens. Others have started to give credit to Jay Z, who has been reported to have taken place in the negotiations for Kap receiving this workout. Jay Z recently agreed to partner up with the NFL. Jay Z was named head of entertainment for the NFL earlier this year and has partnered up to form “Inspire Change” in coalition with the players union. August 13th of 2019 when the deal was done and made public, when asked about Kaepernick, Jay Z replied, “At some point we have to move past kneeling & move forward...” Some thought Jay Z was acting for himself and was the NFL’s scapegoat. Others credited Jay Z for playing chess, not checkers. Then there are those that believe this is simply a ploy by the NFL to say, look we gave him a shot. It didn’t workout, now let’s move past this. The workout is scheduled on a Saturday, when most General Managers, coaches, teams are traveling for the games played on Sunday. So eyebrows are raised.

The NFL definitely wants to place this issue behind them, for many have boycotted watching NFL games in solidarity for Kap being “blackballed” out of the league. This includes celebrities such as Rihanna who rejected performing halftime of the “Super Bowl.” She said, it just didn’t feel right with Kaepernick being “blackballed.”

Teams that have already committed to sending scouts in person, Dallas Cowboys as fore mentioned. The Detroit Lions, Atlanta Falcons, Washington Redskins, Denver Broncos, Tampa Bay Buccaneers & the Miami Dolphins. The Cowboys currently have Dak Prescott a proven starter, still in his rookie deal only making two million. The team hasn’t signed him to a new contract,  Currently, in negotiations, the QB reportedly wants $35 - 40 million per year. So maybe the franchise goes a different way if he doesn’t lead the team to a deep playoff run. The Detroit Lions currently have one of the highest-paid QBs and football players all together with his $135 million dollar contract with $27 million a year. However the team has underperformed. Maybe they’re heading in a different direction. Atlanta Falcons have former NFL MVP & “Super Bowl” QB Matt Ryan. However, he’s aging as well and is widely thought that maybe it’s time to trade him and move on. The other teams mentioned are all in desperate need of a QB.

The NFL has placed itself in an odd situation. The workout seems a bit suspect and as mentioned previous, the NFL would like to put this behind them but may have reopened this and placed the spotlight on the NFL. Especially if Kaepernick has a solid workout. It has been three years since his last action and skills looked like they had regressed the last time we saw him on the field. Saturday will be interesting and then everyone will be watching Kaepernick, the man who has become polarizing.

  • Kawhi Is Here!

    Kawhi Is Here!

    Kawhi Leonard

    by Diaz Mackie

10.25.2019   Coming into this NBA season, I truly thought that LeBron would instantly put his stamp on this season, reclaiming his seat as the best player in the league. The season is young & perhaps he still will do just that. In fairness, I must admit I’ve been LeBron bias for most of his career. I’ve been a hater. I’m from Detroit & he was a division rival & my loyalty runs deep. I hated Jordan also in his day for the same reason. The ONLY times I ever rooted for Jordan in the finals,  is whenever they played Utah. I hated Utah and Boston for my own reasons. I say all of that to say this... I do believe that I was wrong.

I believe LeBron’s time as top-dog on the court, is over. Giannis is a great player, but it’s not him either. KD, if he comes back to old form, the beast also and also not him. Kyrie and Steph, not them. Harden, nope, but I dislike his game, being honest. Kawhi, YES! He has no flaws in his game.

During free agency, I hoped and prayed that Kawhi would go to Los Angeles and play for the Clippers. The storyline is as if written by an Hollywood screenwriter. The “Prodigal Son” returning home, playing for the “Little Brother”, “JV” team instead of the glamorous Lakers. Leading the Clippers to a championship and supplanting the Lakers, while reigning over the NBA. Great story line, right? The drama between houses & personal battle between Kawhi and LeBron head up.

“King James”, from Cleveland , not fully embraced by his new house, still trying to earn their approval. All while standing in the shadows of giants, Magic and Kobe. Kawhi’s personality on the court, machine-like.

However, there’s a piece of his personality that I didn’t notice. Kawhi currently has a new commercial airing for New Balance. In the commercial Kawhi is driving an old school drop-top 1967 Chevy Impala (the car Ice Cube drives in his “Good Day” video), they zoom in on his keys in the ignition & there’s just a CROWN. A direct shot at LeBron. Then the commercial has a sign saying “Kawhi Town”. Kawhi WANTS to directly take it to LeBron as the “Prodigal Son” for the throne of not just the NBA, but the kingdom of Los Angeles.

Kawhi seems to have a natural dislike for “King James”. Tuesday night may have been the gasoline on the fire. Leonard who rarely speaks, grabbed the mic to welcome the fans to the start of the 2019-2020 NBA season. It was a home game for Kawhi and the Clippers, but they were playing “Big Brother” the Los Angeles’ Lakers, LeBron and newly acquired Anthony Davis.  The Lakers share the Staples Center and has championship banners all over the building.

Tuesday night something happened that I and I truly believe, nor did Kawhi expect. The crowd booed Kawhi as he greeted the fans, for there were more Laker fans in attendance than Clipper fans. I can see that adding that extra chip on Kawhi’s shoulder for the remainder of this year. Giving him more reason to go after LeBron and the Lakers. Solidifying the fate of the NBA and directly the Lakers and LeBron James. Naming claims to Los Angeles as his throne and presenting a new generation Clipper Nation as Los Angeles premier team. The battle for L.A.

However as fore mentioned, I could be wrong, but it makes for a great storyline. This season should definitely be exciting and it couldn’t have come at a better time.
