Deion Sanders has set a new standard for HBCU Sports

DeionSanders has changed the game, literally, since arriving at JacksonState as Head Coach of their football program.This week Coach Prime and the Tigers are #SWAC East Champs and will play Prairie View. I speak about what a joy it has been for Jackson State to be as good as advertised and how this is only the beginning for Coach Prime and the Tigers.

According to clarion ledger.com, "I know he gets a lot of criticism from some people who might not agree with how he does things," Simmons said. "But as a coach who watched for a long time us get left out of conversations and not have a seat at the table, we’re starting to be there in many regards. I think it’s a testament to him and some other people. He’s not alone in that fight but he’s definitely been a positive influence."

Sanders has offered help at times to SWAC teams, even when he's not obligated to. Perhaps the best example is when Alcorn State was unable to practice due to a lack of trainers. Sanders offered to send some from Jackson, but Alcorn eventually got the situation figured out.

"I didn't contact him about that, but you always appreciate the things people try to do for you regardless of the institution or his obligation to do those things as well," said Alcorn coach Fred McNair.

And then there's the thing that Sanders does better than just about any other athlete, past or present. Marketing.

"He came into the conference and put a lot of eyes and a lot of spotlight on our conference," Mississippi Valley State coach Vincent Dancy said. "He's been doing a great job of marketing this conference and not just representing Jackson State, but representing the whole conference and making sure that everybody understands that SWAC ball is great football."
