November 30, 2022: John Hadl is 1 of only 3 players to get his uniform number retired at the University of Kansas, and Pro Football Hall of Fame running back John Riggins is not one of them.

He and Tobin Rote alternated as the quarterbacks for the only major league sports team in San Diego to go as far as it could go, the 1963 AFL Champion Chargers. He was an All-Pro 6 times, 4 in the AFL and 4 in the NFL. When he retired as a player in 1977, only 2 quarterbacks in American pro football history had more passing yards: Johnny Unitas and Fran Tarkenton. He should have been elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame before he died on this day.

He was also Steve Young's 1st pro head coach, with the Los Angeles Express of the USFL in 1984 and '85.
