Let's talk about the shot that a lot of people just hate. Of course, it's a lob, and it's not just a lob; many people agree that the lob from the kitchen is a very effective weapon – an aggressive lob. But, almost everyone will tell you that the third-shot lob is an ugly, unnecessary, and weak shot. That's not true. If you add heavy topspin to it, if you put a lot of topspin on it, it becomes a really potent weapon. First of all, it goes really fast, and if you miss it, it's almost impossible to catch, so it will kick forward really hard, and you will just not catch it. Even there are some pros who use that, and the most famous one is probably a AJ Koller. He uses that shot several times, almost every game, especially against women. Why does he use it against women? Because women cannot put it away with so much power as men can, and probably they are not as tall, so it's technically easier.

Some tips about topspin lobs: there are some shots that you don't want to lob against. If people return with a heavy drive with topspin, you actually cannot put enough topspin to make it effective, so avoid those. For topspin lobs, the best shot would be a fly shot against you or even a heavy slice. The thing is, many people struggle with dropping heavy slice, especially when it comes fast. It's not that easy. At the same time, if you don't know how to do a third-shot lob with spin, it goes naturally against that shot. It will surprise your opponents; they will think twice if they shoot that slice against you again.

What is really important, is to put that topspin on it and get under the ball. So the move is like this: pay attention to how you need to bend your knees and get really under the ball to do an effective one. Look at how I use my wrist to really spin the ball. When I do this, my paddle tip is always pointing towards the ground so you can achieve maximum spin and get under the ball. If you're afraid to send the ball out, you should probably use a big diagonal at first; then, you have more distance to work with. The other trick is really good when you serve short, and people run into the kitchen, and then you do that as a surprise and catch them off guard. This should be the main focus on actually spinning. Even some balls land in the middle of the court; they still are challenging to attack because of the spin and the trajectory that curve. Many people, when they try to attack the topspin lob, they hit the ball with the rim and miss it all because of the spin. Focus on spin more than on anything else, and if you focus on spin more than anything else, you will succeed much more often than when you think about where the ball goes and if it goes high enough and all that kind of stuff. Just focus on spin, and everything else will come. This is the hardest part.
So we learned how a spin lob could be a really effective weapon, and we learned how to do it. If you want to learn how to use sidespin, which is also a very unusual shot, you can watch the video right here.
